Specialising in large scale nutrition surveys, this North Carolina group have organised the Russia, China and Cebu (Phillipines) population dietary studies, and have provided detailed methodology information and access to raw results and lists of published papers on-line.

Africa Nutrition Analysis Initiative

Brief information on this project of USAID. "The Africa Nutrition Initiative is funded by the USAID Bureau for Africa and the Global Bureau Office of Nutrition through the Food Security and Nutrition Monitoring Project (IMPACT). Its purpose is to make available to decision makers and technicians nutrition related information contained in the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) surveys in usable formats for policy formulation and program development. DHS surveys offer a timely and cost-effective method for the measurement of child growth (height, weight) and the gathering of information on young child feeding practices, disease prevalence and other relevant information."

HungerWeb (Brown Univ.), Oxfam

"Project of the Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Program at the Watson Institute of International Studies at Brown University. Its aim is to help prevent and eradicate hunger by facilitating the free exchange of ideas and information regarding the causes of, and solutions to, hunger. It contains both primary information, made available by the World Hunger Program and its partners, and links to other sites where information of relevance to hunger can be found. " There is also a gopher site with plain text documents referring to HungerNet.

The Hunger Project

NGO focussing on food security projects in Africa, Bangladesh and India. "The Hunger Project has devised a dynamic, people-centered, decentralized methodology known as Strategic Planning-in-Action . ... to achieve breakthroughs in health, education, food production nutrition, the empowerment of women and improved incomes. " The site has a range of source material from the projects, including news, transcripts of talks and presentations, plus some background papers.

The OMNI Project

Opportunities for Micronutrient Interventions. Organisation based in Washington which has focus on public health aspects of micronutrition nutrition, such as vitamin A, iodine, iron etc, particularly paediatric aspects. Their site gives information about the organisation and access to their publications (both on-line and to download). These vary from workshop reports on public health and regional perspectives, to practical manuals on fortofying sugar with viamin A.

Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition

In collaboration with OMNI (see above). The focus of PAMM is to assist countries with developing their own technical capacity and management systems. Group from Emory University with focus on eliminating micronutrient deficiency. "To accomplish these goals, PAMM works to build public-private sector alliances, strengthen regional and national education and training systems, raise awareness through advocacy at all levels, and to develop standards to establish quality assurance of national micronutrient programs." This page is part of the OMNI site and is descriptive only.

WHO - Nutrition Programme

This program has six main activity areas, with a focus on malnutrition and public health nutrition. Their site provides program information, links to other sites, copies of documents, details of meetings and some primary nutrition data for various countries. This site is important and well worth a visit.

National Specialty Program in Public Health and Community Nutrition based at Deakin University in Australia. This is a very useful resource page for finding out about the Australian situation. It has a directory of courses , which lists all the institutions, contacts and broad outline of material covered in their courses. There is also a survey report on Post Graduate Public Health Nutrition Education in Australia.

5 A Day Home Page

Organisational information about the 5-a-day program, which is a "national nutrition program to encourage Americans to eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day for better health. 5 A Day is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, and the Produce for Better Health Foundation, representing the fruit and vegetable industry, and brought to life in every state and U.S. territory." The site is colourful and does have some recipes and news, but for more educational material itself built around the 5-a-day concept see their general nutrition page.

Shape Up America!

"A public health initiative of the Koop Foundation, a non-profit corporation. Headed by C. Everett Koop, M.D., the former Surgeon General of the United States. Launched in December 1994 to combat the rising rates of obesity in America." This site is a very well constructed and illustrated one focussing on healthy diet and exercise. It has sections which allow you to calculate your own BMI, to assess your fitness level,and to find out about different types of physical activity. There are also press releases, health professional informationand a variety of downloadable documents, including a nicely illustrated guide to healthy eating.

Mainly brief description of objective and requirements of various course components, but with some outline of content, e.g. medical and surgical nutrition assessment checklist.

NUTRIM is an interfaculty research institute of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine of the Maastricht University in collaboration with the University Hospital Maastricht.

Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging

Part of Tufts Univ. Their web site has organisational information and access to search engine for publications of the Center.

Monash University: Nutrition Research Group

Web site describing the staff, activities and publications of this busy research group which is one of Australia's leading centres for clinical nutrition research. Their research interests include: phytooestrogens, nutrition and aging, body composition, nutrition in immigrant Chinese communities and nutritional immunology.

Chinese Health Foundation of Australia

Information about the foundation and its research and education projects amongst the Australian Chinese community. The material is in English, (although there are some Chinese characters scattered around!).

National Health & Medical Research Council (Australia)

Main government funded body in Australian supporting medical research. The web page has some position papers.
